At Mighty Voice, we believe that families who are choosing to seek listening and spoken language outcomes for their deaf and hard of hearing children deserve highly qualified therapists.

In order to provide this kind of therapy, Bridget is currently pursuing certification to become a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist, Certified Auditory Verbal Therapist (LSLS, Cert. AVT).  She has completed 1 year of mentoring with a certified auditory verbal therapist, which included both observing her mentor and receiving feedback on her own therapy sessions.  She took a break when her children were born, and will be continuing the mentoring process beginning in summer 2019.

The process to become a Listening and Spoken Language Specialist, Cert. AVT, includes working with families whose children are deaf and hard of hearing, completing mentoring with a certified AVT, participating in additional training and continuing education, and passing a rigorous exam, and can last between 3-5 years.

Listening and Spoken Language Therapy is built on a number of key principles including:

  • Early identification of hearing loss and early intervention services
  • Using technology all waking hours (whenever a child is awake) to help a child have access to sound and spoken language
  • Following a typical developmental process for learning to listen and speak
  • Understanding that parents are a child's first and best teachers, and empowering families so they can feel confident in this role
